Family Clay Night: Pinch Pot Monster Mash

Friday, October 11

6-7:30PM

All ages

Registration is required for all people present, children under 16 cannot attend alone: an adult 16+ must enroll with them as either a maker or helper.

Teaching Artist: Kelly Seitz

Ticket Types:

Maker - $35 - a child or adult person intending to make a small project to be *fired, and picked up at a later date.

Helper - $25 - a supervising parent who will learn the project and help their child, but does not intend to keep their own project. Practice projects will be made to learn the techniques, but cannot be glazed, and will be recycled after the session. An additional $10 can be paid on-site the night of the activity if a helper decides to finish their practice project after all.

A creative and fun way to spend a Friday evening with family and friends! A Clay Studio of Missoula teaching artist will lead a **small project that can be fully completed in a 90-minute session. These projects will be easy to follow so little ones can join in, but will have plenty of room to customize for more experienced hands who want to riff on the idea to make something different. Those who have clay skills and can follow studio "Golden Rules" can transform their project into something beyond the lesson, but may only use provided supplies, and must finish completely by the end of the session. (Please note, the teaching artist cannot teach a separate lesson for folks who wish to make independently).

These sessions make a great entry point into the world of ceramics! Make a fun little project with people you love and have a relaxed, creative evening. If the clay bug bites you, adults (16+) can enroll in future one-day sessions and 10-week classes for adults, and kids can enroll in our seasonal camps (spring break and summer) and special youth sessions (Fall and Winter Break)! If you want more, you and your family or friends are encouraged to schedule your own 2-hour private session!

*Projects to be fired must be built to be safe for our studio firing method, as cleared by a teaching artist. Parents or a trusted adult mentor must provide aide to children under 12 to ensure they follow studio "Golden Rules" so their projects can be fired. Refunds cannot be issued if a maker is not able to follow directions and a project is not safe to fire, or if pieces fall apart, break, or otherwise do not turn out as desired.

**Projects will have a scale limit, or will utilize a fixed amount of clay in order to moderate material and kiln space usage, to keep these sessions affordable!

  • The electric potter's wheel will not be used in these sessions.

Because of the brief available time, mix of ages, and complex challenge of using this power tool, it can only be used during workshops, classes, and camps wherein the wheel is the focus.

Adults can purchase an annual membership, materials, and a day-use rental to utilize the potter's wheel independently, or enroll in a one-day session or class about the wheel as seats are available to learn. Private sessions can also be booked by adults.

Teens 12 and up can enroll in beginning throwing camps during breaks from public school as seats are available, or parents can organize a privately booked session for children 12 and up.

Children under 12 are not permitted to use the electric potter's wheels at the Clay Studio of Missoula.

  • Projects will be glazed with stroke & coat wonderglaze during the 90 minute session if time allows. If someone does not finish in time to glaze, their project will be fired bare so it can be painted with acrylic or tempera and sealant at home.

Projects must dry completely and are fired slowly and carefully once we fill a kiln. This means firing times can vary quite a bit. We will provide participants with a pick-up slip with a QR to our Pick-up web page. Parents can check here periodically to see if projects have been completed. Usually, projects are ready after about 4 weeks. The Pick-up page typically updates weekly around mid-week. Once projects have been fired, they're usually kept in the classroom for 3 months after they are finished to allow ample time for pickup. Sometimes things are kept longer if space is available, but we can only guarantee 3 months.
